An old Eskimo proverb: “Yesterday is ashes. Tomorrow is green wood. Only today does the fire burn brightly. In every person who comes near you, look for what is good and strong; Honor that; Try to imitate it, and your faults will drop off like dead leaves when their time comes.”

John Ruskin (1819-1900) English Art Critic

“Life is now. There was never a time when your life was not now, nor will there ever be.”

Eckhart Tolle, German-born, Canadian author (b1948).

Connect with people, let them know that when they are with you, they have your undivided attention. It is a remarkable ability to live in the present moment and remain focused on the people with whom we are engaging. Never being rushed, always being patient, kind and available. Give everyone special and personal thought “as if we had no other customers”.

The gift of time on this earth may be the greatest gift God gives us. Without the time to use them, our other gifts don’t matter much. But, rather than spending our valuable gift of time in the here and now, many of us wander off. We find ourselves worrying about the “shoulds” in life – should have done this, should be doing this and that, and it sometimes makes us miserable. Weight Watchers says “Never let people should on you!”

In this respect, misery is a destination, rather than a condition. Most of us have to travel (mentally) to find misery in our lives. We visit our pasts, which are laden with regrets, guilt, old hurts, and unresolved issues. Our futures are a mysterious fog of uncertainty. What will tomorrow bring? The unknown future becomes a vessel which is filled with dread and angst.

We are certainly entitled to our happy memories. Happiness, however, most often resides in the here and now. Unfortunately though, most of us operate in a realm of marginal attentiveness, cycling back and forth through past, present and future.

God made us stewards of our time and we have a responsibility to use that time well. Time is wasted when we spend it regretting our past or doubting our future, rather than living in the joy of the present.

“If you aren’t in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty, or back to pain and regret.”

Jim Carrey, Canadian-American actor and comedian (b1962).

Long before being a Gleek was (kind of) cool

…and even longer before that term was lovingly coined, John Jacobson was moving and shaking up music education.

If you grew up as a music student in American public schools or if you’ve ever danced atop a metal riser in a show choir (or glee club), you’ve probably performed John Jacobson’s music and dances.

He is known throughout the world for his genuine enthusiasm for music and movement. His efforts to share these passions with young people go beyond composing music and making instructional choreography videos. For years, John has been improving the lives of children through his obesity-fighting fitness program, positive message, philanthropic service, and by inspiring youth to discover joy in all of the above.

John has plenty of experience in “mob” choreography both large and ginormous.

In a treat for Ellen DeGeneres on her birthday, he got her whole staff, producers, and crew to break out in a fun, wholesome, choreographed dance that even had Ellen grooving from the sidelines.

He brings the same “Double Dream Hands” flare annually to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade when an enormous crowd of young America Sings! vocalists perform and represent the organization he founded.

Is it any wonder, then, that John would embrace the ever-popular flash mob, encouraging individuals of all ages (YOU!) to get involved in this fun and spontaneous form of exercise?

Don’t worry, if you’re feeling a bit intimidated by the whole flash mob process, borrow some of John’s tips below:

Pick appropriate music

– best if its royalty free, or you can get the rights for your video.

Make your choreography large

– so, when done in a big group looks exciting and fun! The best thing about big group choreography is that even a small move can look great when performed by a lot of people. Find the balance between making it challenging enough not to be boring for your more experienced dancers and not too hard to frustrate your novices.

Create your teaching video

– make it sound fun, explain the moves in detail but not so slow it drives you and everyone crazy. They can always slow it down or go back and look at it again. I know it’s goofy, but record your choreographer from behind (not his or her behind) but from a reverse angle so the dancer’s don’t have to mirror them.

Use the space to your advantage

– use everything around you for spacing and blocking, for instance stair cases, balconies, and so on. Just make sure whoseever property it is gives you the go ahead in advance.

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse and have fun doing so.

It’s dance ….not life or death!

With a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University, John has written and composed many musicals and choral works that have been performed by millions of children worldwide, as well as countless educational videos that have been incorporated into music teaching curriculums.

Committed to touching lives around the world, John is also the author of the new book Double Dreams: Living a Life of Glee, Harmony, and Oh Yes….JAZZ HANDS! and its DVD companion.

Friday, May 11, 2012

My mom, J. Clair Woodbury, would always say, “Keep a Song in Your Heart and a Smile on Your Face”. Momma was so much fun. We would sit together on the front porch of our Nashville home, and after a while we would just start laughing and laughing. Daddy would come in and join us and then he would also start laughing as we created quite a ruckus of excitement.

A way to keep that song going is to avoid talking badly about others. “If you don’t have something good to say about someone, don’t say anything at all”. Good advice, wouldn’t you agree? Fill your speech with words of praise, hospitality, and encouragement to others. It makes life easy and creates lasting friendships.

Am I perfect with this? Let’s see. Recently, I was faced with the option of speaking out of turn to “get something off my chest”. I grew tired and irritable from thinking about it and from the desire to “let someone else just have it”. Then, I had a turning point. My good neighbor of 23 years, Reeva, passed away. I just happened to be cleaning out my storage room at the exact time a crew was hauling away her things after the estate sale. A group of strangers were just hauling her possessions away as the property manager stood by. Sad.

This brings to home what really matters in life. Does “getting our own way” make us happy? Is fulfilling our every whim the formula for creating moral fiber and character? I then proceeded to finish loading up my car for my give-a-way as I de-cluttered my life. I became aware that giving to others was truly fulfilling in my life. Also, as Reeva’s things were unceremoniously packed away in a truck, I realized that the things I own could never compare to who I am on the inside. Then, the little song in my heart began to sing and I was happy inside.

To the last point, if we don’t have something good to say about someone, then say nothing at all. I do not wish anything bad on others. What if the bad thing happened to them? What if I could make someone else unhappy and “pay” for what they did to me? Would that create a memory of a lifetime that I would want others to remember me by? A memory I would cherish years down the line?

I want to be remembered as someone who always wanted the best for others. Someone who was willing to help those around me be the best they could be in their own lives. I want to be a beacon to guide others to a lighted path to their success.

What was that? Hey, I think I just heard a little tune humming in your mind. Could that be the song in your heart that you’ll be singing today?

Next week: If you can visualize it, you can make it happen!

Sincerely,

Nowadays, social media is a way of life and a way of interacting in a community. Online communities provide a sense of identity, belonging, and opportunities that don’t exist in traditional communities the way they once did.

Personally speaking, I find it easier to find like-minded colleagues online than in my own neighborhood. Here, I am one of a minority group of dance artists that may or may not share the same expectations, aesthetics, approaches, and standards. However, communicating online has led to relationships, brainstorming networks, and opportunities that have benefited my work in my actual community.

Why shouldn’t it be the same for kids?

Developing a community of dancers within any classroom depends on multiple dynamics and sometimes thinking outside the room can nurture relationships inside.

Facebook, Twitter, and fan sites can spur students to follow and interact with their favorite dance artists in ways they may never have a physical opportunity to do. Tracking the commentary and posts of these same artists can lead to a developed sense of trust in the teachings you offer in the classroom. It also opens the door for you to discuss modes of communication, etiquette, and networking.

I always appreciate when a guest artist shares the same information I do but in a new way. With tools like Facebook and Twitter, now the reinforcement of my “truth” can come when I need it and not just when I have someone in house.

In the classroom:

As the instructor, establish a professional account for Facebook or Twitter, and use this account to interact with artists on behalf of the class. In this way, you could follow artists whose work is relevant to your class studies. As the responsible adult, you may contact this artist and inquire if they would be willing to set some time aside to “talk” to your class in an interview type format. This could be done in a real-time chat or in an email exchange.
What to do:

Survey the class for questions ahead of time.

Discuss which questions would be important for basic information and which might the artist be excited to answer.

Create a final list of inquiries.

Invite students to pose potential answers based on research they conduct on the artist.

Conduct the interview.

Compare what they expected to learn to what they actually learned about this artist.

On their own:

Thinking of kids exploring the internet unsupervised is, well, scary but there are distinct benefits. Students can start to interact with other dance enthusiasts, including some their own age. Soon they will establish their own group of dance colleagues that can offer support in ways their actual friends may not.
Consider the following in keeping kids safe and engaged:

Explain to your students the etiquette and risks of interacting online and emphasize that an agreement should be reached with their parents before starting this line of activity on their own time. Parents can help monitor conversations to assure not only appropriate communication, but also thoughtful and productive questioning.

Discuss the appropriate way to get an adult’s attention in real life and how it relates to online engagement.

Emphasize mannered lines of discourse- using please and thank you, a respectful tone, and knowing when enough is enough.

Establishing Boundaries:

Just as we want students to demonstrate appropriate behavior, it is important to remember that adults need to do the same. Sometimes we can get so involved with our students that the lines between personal and professional lives can start to blur.

Remember your role. You are a teacher, a role model, and a source of information.

Just as it is important for the conversations you and your students to have with artists be professional, the same goes for you and your students. Ethically, it is important to draw clear boundaries between personal and professional relationships.

Online this means not “friending” or “following” from personal accounts for students, and maybe even their families.

Even from your professional pages or accounts, keep the posts content driven. Keep your comments informational and away from personal opinions that could offend or be misinterpreted.

Be cautious of online relationships with colleagues. They may not share the same ethical standards on social media boundaries and this can confuse the lines you have established with students and their families.

Redirecting

In an age where bullying can reach beyond demanding lunch money and name-calling, teaching to positively participate in varying modes of communication must also be addressed. In many instances, the dynamics of the relationships with friends, frenemies, and others at school does not remain on school premises and is greatly fed by online communication after school hours.

One reaction is to discourage kids from engaging in social media but another would be to use it to reach beyond their current circle, hence finding other kids with similar interests, situations, and goals.

When introducing your students to the positive sides of online involvement, address the negative sides too.

How do you expand the bubble?

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

This week is classical week. As for last week, my predictions came true… Roshon and Gladys were the bottom two, with Gladys being eliminated. Gladys was a class act and had a descent amount of talent. Unfortunetley, not enough for this season.

Starting off classical week is our classical singer, Katherine Jenkins, performing a Rumba with Mark. Not only is she a classical singer, but she must be classically dance trained to some degree. The arch in her feet and ankles are amazing! The leg lines are from training for sure, not the amateur. Can somebody please tell DWTS to put some shirts on these men, it is a bit overdone for this season. Score 27

So pretty much the group numbers are entertaining, but as far as actually making a difference in the competition, it doesn’t.

Next up was Melissa Gilbert and her injured partner, Maks, performed an Argentine Tango. Maks has a cyst in his foot, creating a potential problem for Melissa having to rely on him, and maybe his brother will have to take his place. Maks did dance with Melissa and she had on a weird dress for this routine, it seems out of place and too soft for this dance. It’s a good routine, but unfortunately for them, there has been some really good Argentine Tango’s this season, and this pales in comparison. The music, the dress, the lack of passion or connection really took its toll on this one. Score 21 (I don’t think it was that weak)

William Levy and Cheryl performed a beautiful Viennese Waltz. Unfortunately, William has his recurring ankle injury, but is sucking it up to get his job done. His movement was good, but with the smoke on the ground you can’t really see his feet, good trick. He did a good job with staying on the rhythm because his song had a really soft beat and some professionals would have trouble hearing it. He made it look graceful and has a way of bringing emotion to every dance. Score 27

The next Argentine Tango was performed by Roshon and Chelsea. Needing to pull his act together this week because he was in the bottom two last week and narrowly escaped, he worked on his masculinity with Val Chmerkovskiy. I thought this was classical week, why did they play “Bad Romance” from Lady Gaga? Anyhow, that being said, his performance was strong, interesting, clean and confident. I still agree with the judges that he needs to work on his legs and feet to ground himself, and not look so wobbly. Score 25

On to Donald Driver and Peta’s performance of a Viennese Waltz. His movement and footwork was good, but he still needs to work on his posture. This was a classical Viennese Waltz, and classical steps and style it had! Len was actually spot on, stating his footwork was great, but the fleckarel (a step where the couple turns in one spot) was a mess. Score 27

Maria Menounos and Derek were up next performing a Paso Doble. Oh really, she came out as a vampire with fangs. She has good control, and she was really clean with no visible mistakes. This was one of the best performances of the night. It had a great balance of steps, story, and intensity. Eventually, I warmed up to the fangs. This was good enough to warrant the first perfect score of the season! Score 30

Last up was Jaleel White and Kym performing a Viennese Waltz. This was a very difficult one to hear, as this beat seemed really obscure. Kudos for just being able to hear it and dance on time. Not only was it a fast song, but Kym packed it with steps and had a lot going on. The artistry was lost a bit, probably because of the amount of content within it. Score 24

The night ended with the team competition, and the winning team collecting more points for their weekly score. Up first was Team Tango, with Jaleel, Katherine, Roshon, and Maria. Beginning of the dance was Very Cool and impressive with good performance quality coming out of everyone. This was a really good routine, but I wanted more dancing out of the group because the formation portions were the best part of it. Score 27

The final performance of the night was team Paso Doble, with Donald, William, and Melissa. The beginning was good, very dramatic with the flames and music. The individual performances were hit and miss, with a variety of mistakes and good parts. Donald was the highlight of this group. Cool routine, but not as clean. So, pretty much the group numbers are entertaining, but as far as actually making a difference in the competition, it doesn’t. Score 26

Though this season started out truly impressive, the dust has settled and with each dance, strengths and weakness have shown their face. My bottom two this week are Melissa and Jaleel. They both have executed difficult ballroom moves, but need to develop the artistry and performance aspects. My prediction leaving this week is Melissa.

Christy Melgoza

Franchisee of Arthur Murray Dance Studio Woodland Hills

Arthur Murray Certified Adjudicator

Dancers are athletes.

Just like any other athlete, it’s important that we be conscious about how we are fueling our bodies. The stereotype of the stick-thin waif who dines on lettuce leaves and cigarettes is long gone, and as our field becomes increasingly physical, so too must our fitness and nutrition.

Here begins the start of a brand new series for Art Intercepts. In The Fit Dancer, I’ll discuss principles of exercise physiology, fitness, and nutrition to help you on your journey toward maximum health and longevity in your dance career. To kick the series off, I’m going to let you in on a little secret:

I can be quite crafty in the kitchen!

While you might ordinarily associate my column with dance injuries, pedagogy and miscellaneous ramblings about technique, one of my favorite hobbies is cooking. Dancers are constantly on the go, so we need quick and nutritious meals that can be prepared fast, and/or ahead of time. Since it’s important to begin your long days of class and rehearsals with a good breakfast (and since strawberries are in season right now), it’s only appropriate that I share with you my favorite smoothie recipe. I drink one of these beauties every morning, and should you choose to do the same you’ll never go back to a bowl of cereal.

Lauren’s Fruit Smoothie

1 banana

1 cup frozen strawberries*

1/2 cup frozen other berries (I use blueberries and raspberries)*

1/4-1/2 cup plain yogurt (regular or greek)

juice of 2-3 oranges

spoonful of honey (optional)

Place all ingredients in the blender and puree until smooth. Pour into a glass or travel cup and sip through a straw!

* You can use fresh fruit, but if you do plan on adding a few ice cubes to make it cold and smooth. Better yet, buy fresh fruit in season, wash it, and freeze it yourself!

Hey all,
I’m a beginner taking country western two step classes. Only taken 3 classes so far (1hr each) and having trouble keeping in correct step (QQSS) as the song goes on. I tend to over think things. When I’m about to twirl a girl, I start counting in my head Quick Quick, Slow Slow and then turn her on the second slow. When you guys do the two step, are you also counting in your head or does it just come naturally to you? It does not yet feel natural to me.

I’m about to order one of those two-step instructional videos so I can practice at home.

Any tips for a beginner? Thanks.
